Usually I am a supporter of self-checkout at the store; most people are "scared" of it so the line is short and then I can put the groceries in the bags the way I want them (I like to group them together by location in the kitchen...I know its obsessive). My only complaint thus far is that you should get some sort of discount to check out your own groceries since 1 employee can oversee 4 registers at once; they are cutting down on overhead. Well this was until Sunday afternoon...
On Sunday I decided to do my grocery shopping because this week was going to be rather hectic. So I go to the store, and its PACKED! It takes me close to an hour to do my grocery shopping; I decided to do the self checkout to get out of there faster. So I wait for the gentleman in front of me to check out his ONE item (which takes close to 5 minutes); and then I check out all of my groceries. I go to pay and a system error alert comes up on the screen and it says it needs to shut down. So I signal to the little worker dude that somethings up; he waves and says he will be there in a moment. So he goes and helps a few people at their registers and then a lady comes up and asks him for change. So I am getting a little irratated. He FINALLY comes over and says "You pass the barcode over the scanner to check out mam." I gave him that look like, "You think?!" So then he connects the dots and looks at the screen and says (basically reads the screen to me) "The system needs to shut down." So he says "Wait a few minutes for it to come back up." And I am thinking "ALL I WANT TO DO IS PAY!" So I wait, and wait and wait and wait...for about 10 minutes. Finally the very educated worker says..."when it shut down it lost the memory, come here so I can check out your groceries again." So I go to his little station and he proceeds to rescan everything...in a very rude manner I might add...and what makes it worse is he didnt have a scale so I couldnt purchase any of my produce.
It took me 25 minutes to check out when it was all said and done! Isnt that just absurd!?
I AM BANNING SELF CHECKOUT!

Everyone knows how deeply I DESPISE self-checkout! It ranks up there with the Anti-Christ (well, almost!) I have long said that they are impersonal and flawed b/c we, the general public who are paying for a service, do not have the familiarity of working with them on a constant basis. If I were to go to Olive Garden and suddenly find it was a self-service cafeteria, you betch your boots I'd be expecting lower menu prices! Self-checkout is EVIL, EVIL, EVIL!
