Where are your manners!!

I just can't understand why some children are so mean.

Yesterday, when picking Jacey up from school, we were walking through the parking lot and she noticed a girl from her class dropped her coloring page. The wind picked it up and blew it across the parking lot, and Jacey chased it to get it for her, it then blew into some bushes, so she crawled on the ground to get it. When we looked back, the girl and mom had already left. So Jacey said, "Can we take it home so I can give it to her tomorrow?" And of course I said, "Yes."

So we get home, and she asks if I will please put the coloring page up on her shelf so nothing happens to it. I put it up there and go about our business. So this morning, the first thing she says when she wakes up is "Please dont forget Charity's picture; I know she will be so happy to see it today." So we grab it and head out the door.

The whole way to school she is trying to get all of the wrinkles out and make it look as close to perfect as possible. As we are getting out of the car she asks if I can please hold it so nothing happens to it while she is climbing out; while opening doors, she is guarding it with her life.

We get to her class and she runs in there to give it to Charity, she snatches it from Jacey, looks at it, and throws it at her and says, "I dont want this!!" Jacey says, "But its yours, I found it." And Charity replies, "I DONT WANT IT" and proceeds to tear it up and throw it away.

The look on Jacey's face was heart breaking. She looked so defeated. I dont know how to explain to her that not all people are compassionate and caring; and I dont want this to discourage her. I just cant understand why children are so mean!
