Growing up, we had a Christmas tradition of the pickle ornament. The pickle ornament is a blown glass ornament in the shape of a pickle and after all the gifts are opened on Christmas morning mom and dad would hide the pickle ornament on the tree and the kid who found it first would get a special gift, usually chocolate covered cherries or cashews...yum!
In our family we not only do the pickle ornament, but do the jalapeno ornament too...that way both girls get a special gift ;) But, in addition to these two traditions we also hang blown glass mushroom ornaments. Traditionally, mushrooms are a German symbol of luck and hanging one on the tree is a symbol of good fortune in the new year. So each of us have a glass mushroom that we hang and we remind the girls what they mean as they are hanging them.
